Learn to Say ‘NO’ to Succeed in Life and Business

– Posted in: Weekly Wisdom

In order to succeed in life and business, you need to learn to say ‘NO’.   You only  have a fixed amount of time and a fixed about of energy per day and per week.  Many times you must say ‘NO’ to other people in order to say ‘Yes’ to yourself and your business.   We all want to be liked.  We all want to be ‘the nice guy’  or ‘the nice gal’, and say ‘Yes’ to everyone and have everyone like us.    Unfortunately, when you say ‘Yes’ to everyone else, you are often saying ‘No’ to yourself, to your business, and to your family.   Saying ‘No’ to people is not easy and it’s not fun, but you must learn to say ‘No’ in order to survive in business and in life.  You only have so much time in this life, so choose wisely.

Jim!! This was GREAT. I will be sharing it with all my professional pet sitters in my Facebook group as this is the #1 issue pet sitters ALL have! Burnout is the #1 reason pet sitting companies fail and shut down. We work 7 days a week/365 days a year and RARELY say NO! After ten years in business, I am just NOW starting to say “No” and shrink my service area and be far more selective in clients. It is helping, but still very hard for me to do!! I am going to stick a post-it note to my monitor right now with “Just say NO” ~ thank-you for this video, as always ~ you are right on point!!

Carrie,

Thanks so much for your heartfelt response to my video and blog post. I’m sure everyone feels that they can call you whenever they want and expect you to be ready. Not so fast! You have a life, too! And if you don’t look out for you, who will, right? It’s better for you and your business in the end if you look out for yourself first! Thanks for sharing!!!

This was an awesome and extremely practical piece of advice Jupiter Jim!

And BTW, I had no idea, you graduated from Princeton! That is impressive indeed!

But closer to the point!Learn when to say “no” is a must!

And a process we all need to practice more of!

Thanks for sharing some excellent advice!

Mark,
Thanks for sharing. Yes, it’s so hard to say NO, these days! There are so many people and organizations that want a piece of us at all times. If we say YES to everyone else, we end up saying NO to ourselves and our business.
